In one late night, there was an old man drinking brandy until drunk in a cafe. At the same time there were two waiters staying up and keeping the café, an empty lonely cafe, except for the table with the old man on it. From the conversation between the waiters we can tell that this usually happen and sort of becoming the regular habit for them, waiting for the old man to finishing the drink before they get to close the cafe.
Exposition
Later it turns out that the reason behind why the old man go into the cafe and drinking brandy until late in the night everyday is because the loneliness he has during his old life. He even tried to committed suicide last week but successfully cancelled by the help of his niece.
What becomes the question is why does he even want to end his life or why he feels so lonely becaue with the plenty of money he has now there should be no misery covering is heart. It seems like the loneliness has nothing to do with money simply because money cannot make him happy, at least not everyone can get happy with money.
Rising action
The conflict started to emerge when the younger waiter is running out of patience because he wanted to go home as soon as possible and knowing that he cannot get what he want when the old man is still sit in the café, the younger waiter refuse to the order for asking more brandy. The old man is completely drunk but a well behave drunk and in which he did not give any hard times such as destructive action or any kind just the way common drunker did. The old man accept the refuse of the younger waiter that said to him that there are no more brandy left. The old man left after paying the drinks and leave some tip for the waiters.

The climax is when the two waiters argue each other after the old man leave the cafe. The younger waiter is the one in a hurry to get home and get to bed because he has a wife wait for him. The older one insists on let the old man drink in peace.
Somehow the argumentation between the two of them starts to reach the issues of youth and confidence and job which belong to the younger waiter which the older waiter do not have. In this part of the short story really asking the readers about what it really meant to be young and how different it is from old. The old people were once have it all but then lose it all because everyone cannot run away from getting old.
Falling action
When the older waiter starts to explain why is it that the old man love to come and stay up all night in the cafe to the younger waiter, the younger one automatically close the case in order to get home so that the younger said good bye and walk away.
Now that the older waiter is alone and no one to talk with, he is talking to himself to continue what he said before. The older waiter is finally come to realize why the old man spend his time drinking in the café. It seems like the older waiter is the one who could really understand how the old man feels about.
That it is all about the nothingness. The old man has nothing and the cafe is giving nothing and asking for nothing. The cafe is clean for sure and has the good lightning. The cafe represents the nothingness itself. The pure-no dirt kind of thing.
