Comment on movie watching The Dead Poets Society *tugas mata kuliah poetry*
The movie focuses on
elit prep high school, how the rules are strictly respected through the years
and the importance of study for the future. The parents want the best for their
kids and as the consequences the kids in that school need to learn so hard to
become whatever they wanted--or whatever their parents want them to be. The
learning process is on the number priority for teachers and students,
everything went well just like the other previous year that has already begun,
until an appearance of one new English teacher come to school and start his
class, teaching about poetry. The norm that has long been worshiped slowly
changing.
The eccentric English teacher,
named Keating appeared to be has quite different point of view in a way of
teaching methods that using in class. The boring, pressured class atmosphere
replaced by the introductory to freedom of expression where everyone is
welcomed to do the unusual thing such as; rubbing the first page of text book
that contains principle of how to measure poetry because poetry is something
that cannot be measured or standing on tables while screaming out and jumping
down on the floor just to teach children how to see different angle.
Each of students tend
to have special character that they show in this movie, Todd the clumsy and
obedient student is the one following the rules, at least only in the
beginning, hardly even talk. Neil, always come with fresh idea and technically
the leader in group and passionately eager to play drama even if his father
never give the permission because he is planned to be the future doctor, Neil
committed suicide in his home by his father’s gunshot and becoming the
climactic scene of the movie. Knox, craziest action is on his head ended up
into chaos at the end. Charlie, one sided love cannot stop him to put his
maximum effort to get his dream girl.
If this movie thought
us something, it is nothing but how we need to protect the freedom we have even
if it means we have the world against us. Latin expression “carpe diem” which
literally means “seize the day” that inspired the students to do what they do,
to cherish every day they have. How strong and influential one short expression
yet giving such unbelievable impact.
