Sex Education ( A Netflix Series)

Downloaded the whole season 1 that consists of 8 episodes then watch all at one go. Yep, I should admit that I’ve been a little bit triggered by the title. But once you get to start watching the series, you will know that the show is so much more than the title made you imagine things. Yes, there are literally bunch of scenes related to the title, instead of turn your little brother down there on, your brain will gets pretty much switched on.

Asa Butterfield is a genius actor as we always knew. Already watched some of his movie before, like Hugo and Ender’s Game, and Space Between Us. And now finally he plays the lead character in the newest Netflix UK original series, Sex Education. Go watch it, it is amazing.

The story goes around Otis, a 16 year old boy, unlike any other boys at his age, he never masturbate. Maybe because the trauma over his divorced parents when he was a kid and his mother is a sex therapist makes her basically talking about sex every day. Despite the lack of practical experience, Otis is good at giving sex advice to his friends.

First episode is about...I guess I will not telling you guys what happened in every episode. Other than the fact that I already forgot even though I just finished watching it yesterday, also I don’t want to give you the spoilers, you go watch it yourselves. Super recommended.

The difference between the west world and the east culture always got me wonder sometimes, how can they people in the west takes sex as simple as that. Here in the east, we need to get married first, yeah there are some people do it before marriage, but the majority does not. Is it the culture or the romanticism? But lately, the east has slowly become more west in these past few decades.

Put aside all the culturally or religiously perspectives and talk about this matter as the way it is, sex is everybody’s favorite topic next to the love cases. What makes the show interesting is that, the point of view comes from Otis, who never has sex or masturbate, yet very wise at looking things around him. At some point he realized that sex is not a race, here in Indonesia, it goes like marriage is not a race, yet everybody’s getting married every single day.

Parents need to talk about this sensitive topic in home. What happened to almost everyone here is that we find it ourselves on the internet or talk with friends. Yes we talk about reproduction in biology classes back in junior high or high school but it is only about the biological stuff. Kids need to face the reality beyond what biology books can provide, or they will find out about it more themselves. I know this because yes it also happened to me.

We need to be open about such issues but not entirely as open as what is going on in the west when the parents somehow encourage the kids to do it and basically consider them not normal because they haven’t done it.

Do we have appropriate sex education here in Indonesia other than those awkward biology classes? I don’t think so. The more something is forbidden the more kids want to know about it. If only the particular matter becomes daily topic that does not need to be awkward and taboo. When will that actually be implemented? Nobody knows when.

The platonic love in the show is also super cute, Otis has crush on his friend who already has sex a lot and recently does abortion and asked Otis come to the clinic with her because the clinic says every abortion patient need someone to go home with just in case, while Otis has complete wrong idea and thought it was a date so dress up formally, after get to know the truth, he bought a cake and some flowers, while waiting outside with pro-life community who basically promoting life, big big no to abortion.

Her name is Maeve, but they don’t end up together. Otis is accidentally giving relationship advice for someone who later becomes Maeve’s boyfriend. At the very last episode, Maeve starts to know about Otis’s secret feelings for her but it was too late and Otis got a girlfriend and his first kiss with a girl who also never has sex before just like him, Otis then masturbates in home after the first kiss. The show seriously needs season 2. We need to know what happen next.
